South Coast and thereabouts « Thread Started on Nov 20, 2008, 7:31am »
After watching the 1 Hour race at Wakefield Park on the weekend, I took paddo further south to show him some good roads down there.
As we were already on the road to Braidwood, it was our first stop before heading down the Kings Highway to Batemans Bay. Although this is the main drag for Canberrians to get to the coast, which means it is often choked with traffic, if you pick your times right you can get quite a good run through there, as we did. There is a mixture of slowish corners and open sweepers with the speed limit going from 70kmh to 100kmh at different places. It is for the most part a single laned road each way but there are several places for overtaking until you reach the tight section heading down Clyde Mountain. We only saw one cop car on the way through there which didnt bother me too much but mustve had Paddo puckering his sphincter when he first saw it. The best part of this section was Paddo's reaction at the traffic lights at Batemans Bay when he did the most euphoric "Thorpey double fist pump" I have seen in my life while remarking that he "absolutely attacked it!". Great stuff!
We then rode down to Bega and just past Bega is the turn off to Candelo, Wyndham & Cathcart. This road is usually pretty good and well worth riding, however for us at that time it was a patchwork quilt of partially completed roadworks consisting of sand and loose gravel for most of it. Perhaps it was for the better as the road was also lined by kangaroos that thought it was a great time to cross when I was approaching them. So that was a little dissapointing but we made up for it with a quick strop up the Monaro from Bombala towards Cooma.
We didnt make it to Cooma though, as we thought a better option was to turn right and head towards Bega again via Brown Mountain. Brown Mountain is great too, but Ive always found that the weather can be unpredictable and this was the first time Ive been able to ride it in sunshine. It is quite a steep descent down the mountain and every corner leads into the next. Sometimes you can see the next 3 corners while at other times you cant see the exit of the corner you're in, so its a good mix. There were a couple of deceased marsupials on this road too, with two notables being one right in the centre of the lane heading into a corner and the other being right in the right hand wheel track of the exit to a blind left hand corner. Noice!
Once back at Bega we retraced our ride back up to Braidwood and onto Goulburn and the Hume heading north but only stayed on there briefly so that we could ride down Macquarie Pass and through the "Nasho". Unfortunately we didnt go through the Nasho as I was running low on fuel and didnt feel like pushing my bike after riding for the best part of 9 hours.
But there is always next time, and next time will be planned better and extra leave will be taken from work to see the reast of the roads down there. Our little adventure was only the tip of the iceberg and I reckon a week down there would do wonders for the soul.

I would love to ride these roads. My In Laws live in Narooma, so I've been there several times, but always with the car and family. I remember when I headed from Wagga Wagga to Cooma for the first time, the Wife went nuts in the car, coz I was not shutting up about the roads. Going round the bends with with screeching tyres just isn't the same .
